Saturday, November 12, 2016 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 8 - Mother Crowned in Glory

This week we will focus on Mary’s royal title a little further and then move into another of the Marian dogmas: Mary’s status as Mother of God. For those of us who pray the rosary, this is a familiar title, though perhaps we’ve never given it much thought.

This Session Includes:
Mary’s royal title in the Gospels of Luke and John
The dogma of Mary as Mother of God (Theotokos)
How Mary’s title as Mother of God protects the humanity and divinity of Jesus

Saturday, October 29 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 7 - The Promised Mother

We are back this week.  This week we’re going to examine the role played by the Queen Mothers of the Davidic Kingdom in the Old Testament and how they point forward to Mary’s role as Queen Mother. As we’re about to see, Mary’s queenship is alluded to in Matthew’s genealogy, which opens the entire New Testament.

This Session Contains:
The wise advice of King Lemuel’s mother
The role of the Gebirah, or Queen Mother, in the Davidic kingdom
The Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah and Micah regarding Our Lady
Queen Mother Mary
Mary’s important place in Matthew’s genealogy

Next weekend is the men’s retreat so there will be no gathering at the parish center. Please see the emailed sign-up sheet for car pools to the retreat.  In the past several guys have mentioned the benefits to car pooling in addition to saving gas; it is in the car pool that the fellowship for the retreat starts.  There are still several slots available so it still is not too late to join us, it promises to be a great weekend.

This coming weekend is also the TMIY fall donation appeal.  TMIY has supplied the series we are viewing to us free of charge and the only requirement is the donation appeals.  In the past we’ve passed the basket but this year they are doing it a little different.  This year cards will be handed out much like the stewardship drive for the parish.  Donations can be made in cash, check, credit card, or online, which is the preferred method.

Please Join Us!

Saturday, October 22 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 6 - Born of a Virgin

We are back for another great session.  This week we’re going to talk about important Marian dogmas. In particular, we’re going to focus on the dogma of Mary’s Perpetual Virginity, one of the oldest defined dogmas of the Church.

In addition, we’re also going to deal with the common claim that Jesus had brothers and that Joseph and Mary had marital relations after the birth of Jesus.

Themes Covered:
The nature and role of dogmas
The dogma of Mary’s Perpetual Virginity
Mary’s true interior, spiritual identity
Old Testament foreshadowing of Mary’s perpetual virginity
Answers to the objection of Jesus’ “brethren”
St. Jerome’s answers to the claim Mary and Joseph had sexual relations after the birth of Jesus

Saturday, October 15 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 5 - The Ark of the New Covenant

We are back for another eye-opening session.  This week’s lesson focuses on the connections between Mary and the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. This will lead us to see why she is referred to as the Ark of the New Covenant.

Themes Covered:
The background of the original Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament
Luke’s parallels between Mary and the Ark of the Covenant
Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant

Week 4 - Saturday, October 8

Week 4 is upon us and I'm told group 4 will prepare a new standard of breakfast this weekend.

We've been blessed with great attendance this year and I pray it will continue. It is a grace of God to have the opportunity to spend Saturday mornings with a group of guys who've all answered God's call in some form or another and choose to expand that call in a spirit filled journey together.  Please be sure to share this journey by inviting an acquaintance to join us.

This week in the session "The New Eve", "the roles of Jesus and Mary cannot be separated.  Holding to the pattern of salvation history, the Gospel of John demonstrates that if Christ is the new Adam, Mary is the New Eve, the mother of all who live in Jesus Christ."

I you haven't had the opportunity to make a donation toward the BoB contribution to the Sundancer, there is still time to do it this weekend.  Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this worthy cause.

Blessed be His Holy Name!

Saturday, October 8 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 4 - The New Eve

This week we will analyze why Jesus only refers to His mother as “woman” in the Gospel of John. Our discussion will also include Mary’s title as the New Eve and the real Bridegroom present at the wedding at Cana.

Themes Covered:
Answer those who say Jesus insults Mary at Cana
Connect the “woman" of Genesis, Revelation, and Cana
Understand why the Church Fathers refer to Mary as the “New Eve”
Discover who the true Bridegroom and Bride are at Cana

Saturday, October 1 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 3 - Wedding at Cana, Garden in Eden

We are back for another great week!   In this session, we’re going to dive into the famous story of the Wedding at Cana and see how this event in the Gospel of John is directly connected to the event of the Garden of Eden.

We will also address the accusations often made by non-Catholics that Jesus scolds Mary in a passage in Matthew 12.

Themes Covered:
The Wedding at Cana
The relationship between the Creation account in Genesis and the
beginning of the Gospel of John
The meaning of the mysterious “third day” in John
Jesus’ role as the New Adam
Answers to those who say Jesus scolds Mary at Cana
Response to the accusation that Jesus insults Mary in Matthew 12:46-50

"And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.'"

Saturday, September 24 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 2 - The Price of Failed Leadership

We’re back!  Last week was a great beginning to what promises to be a great program.  This week we tackle the issue of men’s leadership and its impact on our current society.

Don't forget to invite a friend this week!  This is the beginning of an amazing journey.

Stay Up to Date:

Brothers, This is the first big week of "The Bible and the Virgin Mary." If you would like to preview the session you can find it on "Formed." The parish pass code is available - just ask. Also available is a study guide if you wish to study the sessions furthers.

A Few Notes About This Week's Gathering

Just a few notes about this weeks gathering.

As many of you are aware the Band of Brothers was asked by the Sundancer committee to donate a wheelbarrow of spirits to be off at the Sundancer as a fundraiser for the OLF church and school.  When we did this last year some guys donated monetarily and others donated a bottle of spirits, either is acceptable and donations will be accepted for the next few weeks.

The Band of Brothers will again be leading the Rosary before every Mass during the last weekend of October.  Leading the Rosary before our Parish is a great opportunity to honor Our Lady and I ask that each of discern if you are being called to do just that.  Volunteers will be needed before the 5:00 p.m. Mass that Saturday as well as the 7:00, 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday. Please contact me if you are being called to do this.

Those men who are interested in putting together the agenda for the November Mens Retreat are asked to meet after the Band of Bros. meeting this Saturday to plan this.  Positions that need filled are meal coordinator, group coordinator, music coordinator, liturgy coordinator, prayer coordinator, etc.

Saturday, September 17 - The Bible and the Virgin Mary: Week 1 - A Biblical Introduction to Mary

We are finally back.  In this semester we will be growing in our understanding of Mary and Scripture.  However, we will still be discussing issues relevant to men within the small groups.  We hope you are excited for a dynamic year.

Some of the themes we will be covering this semester are as follows:

  • How to properly read the Bible, particularly passages about Mary
  • Review the texts that mention Mary and begin to see the vital nature of her role in helping us get to heaven
  • Learn the connection between Jesus, Mary, and the nation of Israel
  • Discuss the importance of covenants in the story of salvation history
  • See how Mary is the divine “sign” promised by God in the Old Testament
  • Overview of the rest of the study

Looking forward to the first session of "The Bible and the Virgin Mary."

First Session of the Fall Semester - Saturday, September 10, 2016

Brothers in Christ,

This Saturday will be the first session of the fall semester and we will begin it with prayer.  For this series "The Bible and the Virgin Mary" there is no prayer more fitting than the Rosary.  At 6:30 a.m sharp we will pray the Rosary followed by insights into the new year as well as our usual petitions and announcements and registration for the TMIY series and the Men's Retreat.  There will be Rosaries available but please feel welcome to bring your own.

Last evening I sent out an introduction to the TMIY series "The Bible and the Virgin Mary" by Mark Harfield of Paradisus Dei.  If you did not receive it you will need to register for the TMIY series this Saturday.

Group Picture This Saturday, May 14, 2016

Since this is our last meeting for the year, we will take a group picture at this Saturday's session.  Smile.

BOB Dodeka Project - Father Ed Judy House

As I mentioned last Saturday, the Father Ed Judy House will be moving from Fort Logan to the old convent at St. Bernadette's.  The Father Ed Judy House works with women and children who are coming from difficult circumstances.  For more information, click here: https://fejh.wordpress.com/.

We may have the opportunity to help with this ministry when it moves to St. Bernadette's.  I'd like to get a preliminary indication of interest to see if it is worth pursuing, so if this speaks to your heart, please email me to let me know of your tentative interest. There are a lot of details to be determined still, but if we have enough interest, I will continue to pursue it with Catholic Charities.  It may also be a good ministry for those of us who have teenagers as well.

Please contact me if you think you might be interested.

Thanks for your prayerful consideration.

Saturday, May 7 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 9 - Peter Bar Jonah

In session 9 this week, we realize Peter was raised to be a faithful Jew.  “In the light of Jesus’ teaching, however, he has to reconsider numerous things he once thought settled.  For example, the Temple was expected to last forever, but Jesus prophesied it destruction.  The Messiah was expected to unshackle the Jews from Roman slavery and reestablish the kingdom of David, but instead, Jesus offered freedom from slavery to sin and an eternal Kingdom greater than David’s.  Instead of the glory of a throne, Jesus was glorified on a Cross.  Now, as the head of the Church, Peter will be led b y Jesus to the city of Joppa, where he will yet again be called to reconsider and deepen his understanding.”

“So then, brethren stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.”
-2 Thessalonians 2:25

Saturday, April 30 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 7 - Peter and Pentecost

This Saturday we will view the eighth episode of the Lectio Series - Peter.  Dr. Gray discusses the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in Peter’s life starting at Pentecost.  When Jesus ascends into heaven, he tells his Apostles that he will send the promise of the Father to them.  Peter and the others wait in Jerusalem until the Feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descends on them.  From this point onward we see a marked change in Peter.  Speaking in new languages is only one small, albeit attention-grabbing, part of the change.  No longer do we see fear or questioning in Peter; instead he leads the Apostles and preaches to the Jews with a remarkable boldness that will characterize the rest of his life and ministry.

“It can easily be shown from examples both in the Old Testament and the New that the Spirit changes those in whom he comes to dwell; he so transforms them that they begin to live a completely new kind of life.”  St. Cyril of Alexandria

Saturday, April 23 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 6 - Discipleship at a Distance

“What’s the difference between following Jesus closely and following from a distance?  In the session this week, we’ll see how Peter discovers the answer to that question in a terribly painful way.  The “rock,” the “prime minister,” the man to whom the future Church has been entrusted is tested-and we learn from his experience what it truly means to follow Christ and to seek forgiveness.”

The Band of Brothers is privileged to lead the Rosary at all Masses, except the 5 p.m. Mass on the weekend Sunday Mass of May 28 – 29.  Please discern if you are being called to lead the rosary at one of these Masses, a minimum of 4 guys are needed but if we team up for the Masses it will provide more guys the opportunity to participate in leading this devotion.  Please contact Sam Berning if interested.

In addition, the Band of Bros. is responsible for cleaning the ovens in the Parish Center during the month of April and May.  I will be staying after group to clean them this weekend if anyone is interested in helping.

Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one  another, for ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5

Saturday, April 16 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 5 - Peter's Rising Leadership - Part 1

Brothers in Christ,

The session this week discusses the Transfiguration. “Peter, along with John and James, goes with Jesus up a mountain to pray and receive a special revelation of Jesus’ glory.  Peter hears the voice to the Father speaking out of the cloud:  “this is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!”  (Luke 9:35).  This experience prepares the Apostles for the sufferings awaiting Jesus in Jerusalem-and the challenges and sufferings they will experience as a result of following him.”

In regard to the upcoming storm, (of which everyone seems to have a different opinion about), please check your email for a flock note notification that the session is cancelled. I highly doubt it will be necessary to cancel but just in case check Flock Note before traversing any storm.

“And when the priest came out of the holy place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.” Kings 8:10-11

Saturday, April 9 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 4 - Peter and the Keys

Brothers in Christ,

Due to the short time we have left in this semester we will be skipping various sessions as this is a fairly long series.  This week we will skip session four and move on to session five “Peter and the Keys.”  “In the fifth session, we continue our look at a pivotal point in the life of Peter and in the life of the Church.  The “keys of the kingdom” provide the key to understanding Peter’s role in the Church founded upon him.”

If you wish to view the full study of the Lectio series “Peter” or if you wish to view other programs and movies on FORMED please use the link www.formed.org, register and use the parish pass code d9b220, this information to access FORMED is also on the church website. The session “Peter and the Keys is a 48 min. presentation so it will be necessary to start on time and split into groups in a timely manner.  There will only be one or two questions for discussion.

Group 4 will provide a bountiful breakfast this week.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will  give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:18-19

Saturday, April 2 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 3 - Faith, Not Fear: Walking in Trust

I hope all had a great Resurrection Sunday and pray you continue to enjoy the Easter season to its fullest.  This Saturday we will continue with “Peter” and the timing couldn’t be better.  In the third session, Dr. Gray looks at four passages recorded in the Gospel of Matthew.  In each of these incidents Jesus upbraids and challenges Peter, and the Apostles, with the words, “O men of little faith!” pushing them to grow in faith and deeper trust of him and of their heavenly Father.  These passages include: the sermon on the mount, the storm at sea, the walking on water, and the worry of the disciples and what they are to eat when they forget the bread.

This is also the first Saturday of the month so we will say the Rosary afterwards as well.  I look forward to getting together again on Saturday.

“For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts

to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”  2 Corinthians 4:6

Saturday, March 19 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Conclusion) / Tenebrae on March 26

Brothers In Christ,

This week we view the final segment of "Padre Pio Miracle Man."  For  me this movie put a different spin on suffering and made me realize the depth that my paltry sufferings can be used for the good of others.  As we commence Holy Week, take an accounting of the sufferings of Jesus and St Padre Pio and pray that those sufferings continue to be a blessing to us all.  Hopefully this Lenten Journey has provide a better insight as to the necessity of suffering, the graces that come from it, and the spiritual blessings we receive from it.

“It is to your advantage to commit yourself to the sufferings that Jesus will send to you.  Jesus cannot tolerate seeing you afflicted and he will come to you and comfort you, blessing you with many graces for your soul”.  Padre Pio

Next Saturday (March 26) don't miss the Tenebrae celebration @ 5:00 a.m.  Tenebrae is a somber yet joyful celebration in that it helps us to experience more fully the Passion of our Lord Jesus.
As is our normal tradition, after Tenebrae we will go out to breakfast.

Saturday, March 12 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Part 5)

Brothers in Christ,

We have two more sessions to go and with Lent in the back stretch each of us should be prayerful not only about the passion of Christ but also about how to apply the virtues of Padre Pio into our own lives.  See you Saturday!

“Pray, pray to the Lord with me, because the whole world needs prayer.  And every day, when your heart especially feels the loneliness of live, pray.  Pray to the Lord, because even God needs our prayers.”
–St Pio of Pietrelcina

New Flooring, Baseboard Removal - Help Needed

As you know the new flooring for the parish center is scheduled to be installed March 15-17. We will also be installing new baseboard coving (replacing the old baseboard) as a part of the process. In preparation for this the parish needs to remove the old baseboard and we are requesting any assistance you could provide on Monday March 14th between 9am and 11am to "gently" remove the old baseboard. I know it is not a convenient time however it is the only time the hall is available after the weekend.

Please let Woody Ritchey know (woody@tritchey.com) if you can assist in this effort, and if you can assist, lease bring your hand tools (hammer, pry bars, box cutters) to expedite the process. Please let Woody know if you have any questions.

March For Life - Saturday, March 5

This Saturday Arch Bishop Aquila will lead a procession around Planned Parenthood seven times while praying the Rosary.  This procession simulates the seven times around Jericho before the walls fell.  As a group of Catholic men we have a duty to protect and give a voice to the unborn.  Each and everyone of us can be an example of God's love for the unborn if we attended this procession in force.

Everyone is asked to be there by 9:40 a.m. ready to march.  Parking will probably be an issue so for those warriors that plan to attend we can arrange car pooling from the church which we can discuss Saturday.  If you are able to driver please plan to do so.

In Christ!

Saturday, March 5 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Part 4)

Brothers in Christ,

In this the fourth Saturday of Lent, we continue discerning the trials and tribulations of St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.  In the next four chapters we witness the death of Padre Pio’s mother, his restriction from celebrating Mass in public and hearing Confessions, World War II, and the planning stage of a hospital for the sick after the war.  As he ages, and in total disregard of his sufferings, Padre Pio continues to shepherd the poor, the sick, the dying, and the lost souls.  The mercy he exhibits is but a small portion of the mercy Christ has for each one of us but the mercy we have in comparison to his is all to trivial.  For the remainder of this Lent I pray that each one of us may be an example by reaching out to others exhibiting the love of Christ and his mercy.

Heaven and Earth may change, but God’s mercy will never be exhausted – St .Faustina Kowalska

Saturday, February 27 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Part 3)

Brothers in Christ,
This week it’s time to reflect about how our Lenten promises are being upheld, and where we need to make adjustments to achieve a closer, stronger relationship with Jesus this Lent.  In this session we see St. Pio continue to deepen his relationship with Christ.  Even when persecuted by leaders of the Church he loves as Christ loved and harbors no ill will.  Through all his trials Padre Pio maintains a steadfast love and continues the journey set forth for him by God.  This week we see examples of shame, humility, and love.
Humility and purity are the wings which carry us to God and make us almost divine.  You must always humble yourself lovingly before God and before men, because God speaks only to those who are truly humble and He enriches them with His gifts. St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

Saturday, February 20 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Part 2)

Brothers, this week we continue with the movie “Padre Pio, Miracle Man” and Padre Pio’s early years as a Priest. This Holy and devoted child of God exemplifies a person of humility as well as one who considers himself proud and conceited.  In this session Pio continues to experience torments and he receives the Stigmata of which he finally accepts and draws on for strength.  Many parallels are shown between the life of Padre Pio and Jesus himself.  As we continue this Lenten Journey let us realize the importance of Padre Pio’s life to the world and how our life obstacles are small in comparison.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
Prayer of St. Francis

Saturday, February 13 - Padre Pio Miracle Man (Part 1)

Brothers In Christ,
It’s that time of year again when we traverse together a Lenten Journey.  This Lent we will explore the life of St Padre Pio of Peitrelcina by viewing the DVD movie “Padre Pio, Miracle Man.”  Each week we will view a portion of the movie and then break in groups to discuss that segment.

 pio_look3.jpg (15687 bytes)

After performing a little research of Padre Pio’s life, his miracles, torments, and prayer life, the logical conclusion is he is a Saint’s Saint.  While we’ve all talked about virtue’s and expressed our longing for the grace to uphold them, we’ll discover how that grace is accepted by Padre Pio and the benefits to all because of it.  Prayer has been a central theme this year and we are blessed to have the opportunity to discover a man who lived prayer.

The following links provide a glimpse of a day in the life of Padre Pio as well as a Novena to the Sacred Heart he prayed daily.  More about St. Padre Pio is available on this EWTN site and I encourage you to read in depth about St. Padre Pio so as to gain a better understanding of the movie and it's timeline.

Let Us Pray:
God our Father, You helped St. Pio to reflect the image of Christ through a life of charity and self-sacrifice. May we follow your Son by walking in the footsteps of St. Pio of Pietrelcina and by imitating his selfless love. Amen

Saturday, February 6 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 2b - Capernaum: Village of Coming Consolation

As we continue this week with the series PETER and the second session “Capernum: The Village of Consolation,” Dr. Gray continues his discussion of why Jesus made Galilee the home base of his ministry.  Dr. Gray will explain in more detail why the Church matches Isaiah 43 with the gospel of the healing of the paralytic. How we can trust Jesus’ promise of forgiveness and receive more fully the graces of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  And what the back ground of Isaiah 40:1-2 tells us about the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete.
Therefore, days are coming—oracle of the LORD—when it will no longer be said, “As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of Egypt”;  but rather, “As the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites out of the land of the north and out of all the countries to which he had banished them.” I will bring them back to the land I gave their ancestors. Jeremiah 16:14-15
Group 1 owns the privilege of making and serving breakfast this week.

Saturday, January 30 - Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism Session 2 - Capernaum: Village of Coming Consolation

Last week, in the first session of PETER Cornerstone of Catholicism we were introduced to Peter.  With his “yes” to Jesus’ invitation to “put out into the deep,” Peter becomes a disciple and apostle of Jesus, and begins the journey of following Jesus closely.  In this session “Capernaum: Village of Coming Consolation,” Dr. Gray will take a closer look at Peter’s hometown of Capernaum and the larger area of Galilee where Jesus grew up and began his ministry.  We’ll discover the significance of that geographical area to Jesus’ teaching and works and we’ll find it is no accident that Jesus makes this city in the heart of Galilee the home base of his Galilean ministry.

“If a man loves me, he will keep my work, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” John 14:23

Thanks to all those, especially Rich Phillips, who took part in completing the remodel of Linda Lou Egan’s basement.  Linda Lou is more than grateful the Band of Brothers stepped up to ensure her basement was put back together after the major flooding it experienced this summer.

Group #5 will furnish breakfast this week.

Saturday, January 16 - Lectio Session 1 - Prayer: An Intimate Dialogue

Gentlemen, Welcome Back!

We will continue the theme of prayer in the spring semester by viewing “Lectio” a presentation by Dr. Tim Gray.  Prayer is fundamental to the Christian life because we are created by God for an intimate and everlasting relationship with him. But as Fr. Albert Haase already relayed to us a relationship can’t be built or maintained without ongoing conversation with the other person. Despite how basic prayer is to a life of faith, it is not always easy.  Session 1 of "Lectio," will explore the difficulties we experience in prayer and point us in the right direction of approaching prayer as a conversation.

In this semester we will continue with prayer and petitions at the beginning of each session; however, instead of taking time to ask for petitions a petition sheet will be available to list petitions prior to starting the session at 6:30 a.m.

Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name; make known among the peoples his deeds!  Sing praise to him, play music; proclaim all his wondrous deeds!  Glory in his holy name; let hearts that seek the LORD rejoice!  Seek out the LORD and his might; constantly seek his face. Psalm 105:1-4

Weekly Sessions Will Begin NEXT Saturday, January 16, 2016

We will not meet this Saturday (1/9) but will resume our Saturday morning weekly sessions again on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 6 a.m. in the Parish Hall.  Group 3 will be providing breakfast.  Looking forward to seeing everyone.
